ISO/TS 16949 Quality systems - Automotive suppliers
ISO/TS 16949 is the automotive ISO Technical Specification that applies the ISO 9001 standard to an automotive supplier. In addition to all the ISO 9001 requirements you also need to meet additional automotive supplier tools such as PPAP and Measurement Systems Analysis (think of it as ISO 9001 on steroids).
A key difference from the older Automotive Quality Management Systems (such as QS-9000) that really is not apparent by reading the specification is the requirement that you use the "Process Approach" when setting up your system. Your Management System should be set up around your processes not the ISO/TS 16949 specification.
Note: IATF has just announced that ISO/TS 16949:2009 was released on June 15, 2009, the changes resulting from the ISO 9001:2008 and the IATF has indicated that there will be no additional TS requirements as a result of this release. Your organization will have 120 days from the release of the Technical Specification to make any necessary changes in your organization. It is important to note that the Certification Bodies (Registrars) have new rules that they are expected to follow that may or may not impact your organization.
What about all those AIAG manuals? Hang on to them, PPAP and MSA is to be used if the customer does not specify otherwise. The remaining manuals are for reference (still have APQP, FMEA and SPC requirements).
What about Registration to ISO/TS 16949? A number of Registrations to ISO/TS 16949 have already occurred however not all Registrars are capable of registering a company to ISO/TS 16949, for information on registrars contact Eagle Group USA.
