Two Plants Recommended for Responsible Care Certification Monsanto’s Soda Springs, Idaho, and Luling, Louisiana, plants have been recommended for certification to the Responsible Care 14001 standard. The RC14001 standard specifies management system requirements for environmental, safety, health and security for member companies of the American Chemistry Council (ACC). Audits at the Muscatine, Iowa, plant are scheduled to be completed in July.
The standard is part of the ACC’s Responsible Care program, a U.S. chemical industry performance initiative. In the United States, Responsible Care companies have reduced environmental releases by 78 percent since 1988 and achieved an employee safety record that is four and a half times better than the average of the U.S. manufacturing sector.
RC14001 certification verifies that a company has met ISO 14001 requirements and additional obligations under Responsible Care, such as worker safety, security, product stewardship, community outreach and transportation safety.
“Through the RC14001 certification recommendation, the Luling plant is recognized as having an excellent environmental, safety, health and security management system, and this is just one more step in our process of continuous improvement,” said George McGowan, plant manager. “It is also clear from the audit that all employees clearly understand and embrace the meaning of ‘freedom to operate.’”
The Soda Springs and Luling plants have spent the past two years preparing for the RC14001 audit. Auditors spent several days reviewing the plants’ conformance to the RC14001 standard prior to certification.
"The lead auditor was complimentary of the plant’s ESH and security management systems when announcing his recommendation that RC14001 certification be granted,” according to Bruce Pallante, Soda Springs plant manager. “I’d like to thank all of the employees who spent countless hours to ensure this success. We all benefit from a safer, healthier, more secure and environmentally friendly workplace."
Certification by the end of 2007 is required of all ACC members. Monsanto has been a long-standing member of ACC and has been following the Responsible Care guiding principles since the 1980s.
